ACT/SAT Overview
We stress a personalized approach to tutoring.
A baseline score is critical in determining which test to focus on and which content areas need the most work, so we require students to take both the SAT and ACT once—either a mock exam or an official test—before we begin prep. It’s also helpful to have a realistic goal score and range of schools students are interested in applying to.
It’s important to identify specific strengths and weaknesses to determine which test is each student’s relative strength. We operate under a framework, but also allow for flexibility with each student.
Sessions are 90 minutes to 2 hours and we generally meet with students for 15-20 hours prior to a test. We start 2-3 months out from the student’s goal test date and customize a plan to have the student fully prepared for their first test. The most important part of the prep process is the student.
Taking practice test under timed conditions is the best way to see scores improve drastically. We use real, recent ACT/SAT tests and expect students to complete one full test for homework each week (only about 3-4 hours worth of their time) , score the tests themselves, and come to us with specific questions they have both about content and strategy. This allows our sessions to be as efficient as possible.
